She raised an eyebrow. “Why can’t I come with you? You’re going to leave me with someone who the only thing I know about them is that they have a penchant for trying to kill me.”
She shot him a small smile. “I don’t mean any offense. It’s almost a compliment; only one other person has gotten that close to killing me before.”
She laughed slightly, shaking her head. "Nah. I had every encounter with Gabe under control," she teased, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. "He just thinks I'm charming. Unlike you, who didn't even give me the chance to talk and try and put you under my spell."
Gabe huffed, heading to his room while Jared leaned against the wall. "Is that so? Then who else got you?"
She watched Gabe leave, a bright smile on her face, before she turned to look back at Jared. "I was pretty young and new to the game, about 18 or so. It was one of my first kills. I got out to the roof and got cornered, and someone grabbed my throat and held me off the edge. I only got out from swift kick and a well-placed fire escape."
Her eyes widened with surprised amusement and she kicked at him playfully. "But your first guess was 20. I'll take that as a compliment."
