Saw this last week. It wasn't quite as good as I hoped it would be, but I still enjoyed it a lot and it seemed slightly better on a second viewing. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. Here's hoping they'll have the chance to do another film, set entirely in Equestria next time.
As I watched it again, I'm pretty dissatisfied with how Sunset had the quickest change of heart in the history of TV villains. It was like: "Haha. I'm the most powerful demon ever!" *Loses* "*Cries* I'm so sorry. I didn't know there was another way." Given the limited time they had, they could have reformed her like this guy:
On that subject, Janemba, I'm starting to come up with a headcanon. I think the Elements of Harmony have a special property that show whoever they're used on the error of their ways, and whatever they do with that information depends on them. Like Luna never truly wanted to be evil, and she realized what she had become when the Elements were used on her. Discord is Discord so he didn't give a crap. And Sunset Shimmer was able to see that she went too far. It's a headcanon I like because villain reformation seems like less of an asspull with it. xD
When you think about it, it makes sense. She was struck with a purification beam from the elements of harmony. The beam acts to purify all elements that disrupt harmony. In the case of Nightmare Moon, Luna was freed from the grips of Nightmare Moon and returned to her original form, feeling much regret over her actions while under the influence of Nightmare Moon. With Discord, he is disharmony incarnate! Of course he would be disabled by it. With Sunset Shimmer, her heart had turned cruel from her jealousy and greed. The elements of harmony purified her of this leaving deep feelings of remorse since her heart was permeated by the magic of friendship. Considering how we've seen the elements work, this is a very believable conversion. And with my forgiving nature, after all she did to make me hate her, I felt really sorry for her and wanted to comfort her. She just made some bad choices and needs a forgiving heart to give her the opportunity to atone. I once derided Twilight a bit for being so quick to forgive Trixie after the events of Magic Duel, but here I am doing the same for Sunset Shimmer. I guess that is kind of ironic.
I guess I would have just preferred it to have been dragged out a little more. I like this kind of drama.:derpe: Still love the movie.
I very much agree. I loved the ending with Sunset Shimmer, it was so sad and you actually felt bad for her.
Okay, so like I said in the non-spoiler thread, I really liked the movie. Twilight trying to get used to her wings and later trying to get used to being a human was funny to watch. Spike was very helpful despite being a dog. The jokes worked. Even Snips and Snails were funny. And Flash was quite okay. I'm almost disappointed that he's not going to play a role in Season 4. As a whole, the story was good. For the most part. It had some odd bits though. "Thirty moons". Considering that, usually, all the important things happen at thousand year intervals, 2 1/2 years between portal activations doesn't sound so bad. It gets even better if you consider that, in Equestria, the moon rises every evening and sets every morning, essentially making "30 moons" synonymous with "30 nights" instead of months. Not bad at all. I didn't really like Pinkie temporarily gaining omniscience when it came to Twilight's true identity. Not only did it feel like a cop-out so Twilight wouldn't have to explain it herself, but the way Pinkie just shrugged it off felt just so odd to me, even for Pinkie. Personally, I'd have preferred it if Pinkie had been just as baffled as the others after finding out she was right, revealing that she was just joking. But... at least she wasn't reading from a script like she does in some fan works (I always find it so cringe-worthy when she does that), so that's good at least. I don't get Sunset Shimmer. Nothing about her makes sense to me. Not her goals, not her motivation... even her final form looks just goofy to me. Celestia describes Sunset as a rather impatient character, becoming exasperated when things don't go her way immediately. So she goes to the human world to do... what exactly? Spend her time at school just to be crowned princess year after year after year? And speaking of years, how old is she even? Considering that she was Celestia's student before Twilight and Twilight has been Celestia's student since her childhood, shouldn't Sunset be about twice Twilight's age or something? Unless she left Celestia when she was still a small foal, immediately before Twilight's arrival, but how likely is that? And then there's the final battle. Now, I'm not surprised that Sunset's whole plan backfired when she tried to use the crown against Twilight. Not only because of the magic of friendship, but also because Twilight is the true bearer of the crown. No, what bothers me is that Sunset was able to activate the crowns magic at all, and that the crown - you know, Element of Harmony and all that stuff - transforms her into a demon. ... yeah, right. Maybe someone can explain this to me? So yeah. But other than that, good movie.
Yeah, Sunset Shimmer turning into a demon not only felt Over-the-top, but it felt like flat out fanservice by screaming "look what we can get away with in a little girl's movie!"
Princess Celestia is 1000+ years old. Principal Celestia, her AU double, seems to be in her late thirties or early forties. Huh?!

My responses in red. You're talking about the original Kingdom Hearts right? I can sorta agree on that, but the series is pretty good. They are at least interesting if not the best games around.
But why would a moon cycle be anything else than 1 day if it rises and sets every single night? True, it probably wouldn't have changed much story-wise. It still rubs me the wrong way, though. Didn't Celestia say that Sunset Shimmer was a student not long before Twilight became one herself? But yeah, we should probably take everything Celestia says with a grain of salt... Yeah, the Elements probably do work differently in the human world. Still, even though Sunset knew this (and how did she even know this?), looking at her transformation scene looked as if even she herself didn't know exactly what would happen. The transformation looked downright painful. Is that really something she willed to happen? Also, the whole plan of taking over Equestria with a handful of brainwashed students was so silly and so out of left field that Sunset didn't really seem like herself anymore. Another corruption victim? Yeah, she might have been able to channel the crown's magic, but it didn't quite look as if she expected the result to be like this. Hmm... As for why the crown worked for Twilight and friends even without the other Elements being present... well, when Twilight "fixed" Starswirl's spell, the other Elements reacted to it magically... infusing Twilight's crown with part of their power, perhaps? Just a bit of brainstorming.
I just realized that this is the first time death was mentioned in MLP. Maybe season 4 will be darker. I have no idea how I would feel about this. Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2
