"Mama was talking to me about being prep... prep...prepears if you didn't ask me to. She said I couldn't cry about it."

 

"That's what I thought too," she said, nodding. "I thought it would be mean."

 

"If you were to stop me from walking. I said to Mama that you promised, but she wasn't sure."

 

"I know. I didn't believe her at all. But she said to be careful. But see?" She patted his face cheerfully. "You kept your promise!"

 

She grinned, exposing pearly baby teeth.

"You're married now. Is that scary?"

 

"But you've only been married for ten minutes. How can you already know if it's amazing?"

 

"But what if being married makes it worse? What if things go bad really quick?"

 

"I don't know. Isn't marriage supposed to be spooky? Like... a very scary thing?"

 

She frowned and shook her head.

"I'm pretty sure it's scary."

 

She nodded, tugging on the tablecloth.

"Where are you going after this?"
