She rested her head on his shoulder as she spoke on the phone. “Yes, hello, could I get two gallons of mint ice cream delivered to my hotel room? Preferably into the room?”
She coughed twice, and adopted a scratchy voice. “Yes, well, you see, I’m very sick. On my deathbed, some may say. I’m bedridden, and very few things bring me joy still. Thankfully, mint ice cream still gives me happiness. Unfortunately, I cannot get out of bed to receive it. Do you think you could help?”
She reached up and tugged his earlobe distractedly, leaning back against him. “Oh, you could? Thank you! I’m at the Hotel D’Barbara. Room 309. Do I pay over the phone, or...?”
She rolled her eyes before tilting her head back, tugging on a lock of her hair. “I see. Thank you! The door should be unlocked when you get here.”
She nodded slowly, before realizing that the person on the phone couldn’t see her. “Lovely. Thank you!”
She hung up and turned to him before climbing onto his back and wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing his cheek. “You distracted me.”
“I’m always teasing you when I do it,” she said, tugging on it lightly. “But it’s an affectionate tease.”
