"I don't know," she murmured, closing her eyes. "I was just scared you'd leave again. You were gone for so long."
He was quiet for a moment. "This wouldn't have happened if I never agreed to meet at the hotel. I knew we should have told Derrick first."
"The baby is fine." He pulled his hand away hesitantly. "Maybe I should just go.. What if they come back.. What if I don't catch them in time and something bad happens?"
“Then you’ll protect us,” she said, her voice confident. Her thumb brushed his cheekbone slowly. “I know you will.”
Her brow furrowed and she studied him with pursed lips before kissing him, her hands cupping his jaw. "I'm not saying it won't be scary," she murmured quietly. "But I can't lose you again."
She would feel wonderfully familiar to him, with the exception of the baby bump, and she wrapped her arms around his torso, resting her head just under his collarbone.
