"No."
"What do you want me to do?"
"Listen better."
She was quiet for a second before sliding off his lap. “Fine.”
He nodded. "Thank you."
She sat on her bed, still frowning slightly, but looking up at him. “Now what?”
He stood. "You can't complain when you don't have your way."
She squinted and he would see that she was considering crying. "Why not?"
"Because sometimes it just works that way," he said gently.
She hugged her doll to her chest, lying back on her pillows. "But why?"
He kissed her forehead. "Because sometimes things just don't work out.."
"Why don't they work out?"
"Certain things happen that don't allow it."
She frowned, obviously stumped.
He sighed. "Try not to get upset as much, okay?"
She sighed, but leaned back. "Okay, Daddy."
"Thank you," he said gently. "Will you help me clean up your room?"
She shook her head. "No."
He crossed his arms. "What did I just tell you?"
"Not right now."
