"Yes," she said, "I can see that. This is really bad for our relationship, Craw. I happen to love giving gifts to people."
"Well, we promised each other we weren't going to break up, so we'll have have to come to an agreement."
"Ach, fine," she said. "How about I buy you gifts and if you don't like them you can take them back. Sound fair?"
She shook her head against his chest. "No, it's not," she responded thoughtfully. "It's your birthday, and I truly want you to be happy. If that means that you have to switch out my gift with something you like more, then that's okay."
She leaned into his hand, closing her eyes for a moment. "I should probably call Derrick and let him know that I'm not going to make it for training," she said reluctantly, opening her eyes to look at him.
"Okay," she said, standing up and kissing his head. "I'll be right back." She went into her hallway and spoke quietly. "Hey, Derrick," she said quietly. "I'm sorry; I don't think I'll be able to make our training session today." She was quiet for a moment, listening. "Yeah. Well, normally I wouldn't, but I kind of got in a fight today, and it didn't go too well." Another pause. "Yeah, I'm fine, thanks. My fiancé came in the nick of time, actually. But they busted up my ribs pretty badly." Quiet again. "Oh really? Huh. Well, his name is Francis. What? Okay. I'll talk to you later. Thanks, Derrick." She hung up and returned to Francis, stretching slightly.
