It wasn’t her, with the eyes a dark brown instead of grey. The last group of people streamed out of the area, and Poppy was nowhere to be seen.
He stopped, turning around quickly and picking her up in a loving embrace. "Oh my god, there you are. There you are."
She tensed instinctively when he picked her up, but she relaxed almost immediately, laughing lightly as he held her. “Hey, baby,” she murmured, kissing him lightly. “Hey.”
“I’m sorry,” she murmured, wrapping her arms around his neck, relaxing for the first time in days in his arms. “I didn’t mean to frighten you.”
She nodded and only then would he be able to see how worn she looked. She had dark circles under her eyes, and her face lacked its usual rosiness. The intercom went off and she tensed in his arms. “Yes. Let’s do that.”
“I really missed you too,” she murmured, resting her head just underneath her collarbone. “Like, really missed you.”
Poppy was quiet on the walk out of the airport, her eyes thoughtful but downcast. She held his hand the whole time, her fingers intertwined with his as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “So,” she asked eventually. “How has your week been?”
