"No," she said, her brows furrowed as she stepped forward. "You don't get to say that." Her voice was trembling with a mixture of panic and anger and she pointed a finger at his chest. "You think about this. If you knew that I was going to be returning to battle again after having been really injured because I was protecting you, and I refused to stop... If I was lying on this table, and you thought I would die and I told you that I wouldn't change a thing, that I'd jump in front of another bullet for you if given the opportunity, you're telling me that you wouldn't have tried to stop it? You're telling me that you wouldn't have panicked?"
"It's what I signed up for," he shot back fiercely. "I pay for any consequences. The entire point of my job is to protect you and everyone else while attacking the energy. You're job is to heal. That's what you did. You would argue the same point!"
"That is not your job!" she replied furiously. "Your job is not to take a bullet for me! Your job is to fight and take out the enemy. That's it. That's the entirety of your job description. You do not have the right to risk your life for me. That's not how this works! That's not fair!"
"That is my job," he agreed sharply, "but it also consists of protecting. Had I not done what I did, you probably would have died! What then? What would we have done?!"
"You would have been fine! Most people here know basic medical training and there are other medics. People don't take medics on missions to be protected. What would we have done if you had died?" She paused and her voice cracked slightly. "What would I have done? What would I have done if you died and I had been the reason why?"
"I wouldn't have been fine! I wasn't fine when you were gone for six months! It was my actions that caused this! Not yours. I just want to be helpful here!"
"No, you're just being protective! It isn't helpful that I have to worry about your life on these missions! Can you imagine if you thought that every bullet that was fired at you could be the one that killed me? Think about that!"
"I didn't die, damnit!" His voice was sharp and raised, unlike how he ever spoke to her. "You have to see that! If I hadn't have been hit, you would have died! I am alive, and you don't have keep me from doing my job because you're worried! That's being protective!"
