"Are you sure we have to?" Taffy asked, eyeing the stairwell with clear discomfort; It was bad enough being up this high, but to have to walk down those stairs? With that terrifying drop down the centre? "Perhaps if we wait a little bit, the elevator will come?" she suggested, hopefully.
"Well, there is another way, but it would be exhausting," Arcana said as his horn started to glow. After a while the doors open as the elevator shows up.
"Did you just you just bring that up by yourself? Like, with your magic?" Taffy asked in awe. "Ya didn't need t' do that," She said, suddenly embarrassed, "I mean, if it's broke, I'm sure I could of fixed it."
"To fix the elevator, we would have had to go down to the basement, I think." Arcana said while keeping the elevator up. "I noticed that you don't like heights. So, I wanted to make it more comfortable for you." He walks into the elevator. "The elevators are run by magic anyway."
"That's very kind of you," Taffy said, smiling gratefully. "I just don't want you tiring yourself out on my behalf." "As for the elevators, lots of things are powered by magic, but they still have some mechanical parts; that's what I fix. Perhaps I'll have a look at them when we get back..."
"Okay, but still this is almost a cantrip for me," Arcana said, somewhat boastfully. He brought them both down to the first floor and opens the doors for them. "Sir," an employee pony of the hotel came up to Arcana. "Please don't interfere with the elevator again" "My apologies. Forgive my impulsiveness," Arcana said quickly.
Arcana looks at her smugly, "It's not like I was a good-hoof growing up. I got into my fair share of trouble." He gently lowers the elevator to it's resting spot and begins walking to the front door. "How about you, clean record or no? I'm just curious," He said playfully.
"If I'd grown up in a city like this, I probably wouldn't have," Taffy admitted. "But out in the country, there's more... leniency, ya know? Everypony knows everypony else, so there's not a lot of theft and stuff, and the minor things tend to just be overlooked. I've gotten into a few barfights with stallions who were acting all kinds of ungentlecoltly, but it always landed them in more trouble than me." "'Course it helps being the daughter of the saloon's owner; nopony wants to get barred, the Sheriff included." She added, smiling mischievously.
Arcana laughed at the thought,"Hahaha, that makes sense, though the person who could bar you from the saloon would ground you instead, right?" He continued laughing. "Sorry, that was just needed. Family is great, isn't it?" He asked with a grin. "My mom was a working mom, what about yours?"
"Yeah, family's important," Taffy smiled weakly, "Never knew ma mother though. Dad didn't like to talk about it, but she left when I was a foal."
"I- I'm so sorry," Arcana said, deflated. "I didn't mean to ..." He trailed off, trying to find the right words.
"Ah, that's ok." Taffy said, forcing a slightly wider smile. "It's not your fault, and I don't really remember her anyway."
"I'm still sorry for bringing up something uncomfortable," Arcana said solemnly. As they walked through the streets of Manehattan to the venue. He found himself staring at the various pieces of art that pop up here and there. "I love artwork, almost no matter the form, what about you?" He asked softly.
Taffy shrugged. "I respect the work folk put into them, but I've always seen more beauty in machines; form through function, ya know? The way all the components work together in perfect harmony..." She smiled, staring off into space distractedly.
Arcana smiled mischievously. He slowed down to walk evenly with Taffy as she was staring into space. His horn glowed slightly and a little poke was felt on the other side of her. He smiled and simply said, "It's cute you're so passionate about your abilities."
"Eep!" Taffy jumped at the poking and blushed as she refocused. "I didn't mean to go waxin' all lyrical like, it's just not something I get a lot of opportunity to talk about." She looked at Arcana and smiled, "But thank you though." "I'm sure if we was talkin' about music you'd go all misty eyed, though." She said, in mock defence.
"Yeah, I think you're right. I would do that," Arcana admitted. "Still your reaction is also really cute."
"Nope, I would gush and then be embarrassed," Arcana said matter-of-factly. He smiled and then laughed at their antics.
