Hey, could you move Naturematthe's "The reason why" RP? I'm not gonna let that die, it's just seen a resurgance of activity in the last...oh...day. If you could, that would be nice! Thanks!
On the question of horns as light sources, horns probably only hold about the same sort of glow as... glow sticks. You can notice the light fairly well, but it doesn't project worth maneuer. I'm sorry I didn't give you a light spell. Did you want to trade one of your level 0 spells for a light spell?
Actually, that does seem like a good idea, since we'll be exploring a cave and all... hmmm... Perhaps trade my "Life Invigoration" spell for it? I mean, it seems like a useful spell, but probably the least useful of my spells...
Okay, and more questions: May I use level 0 spells, or are they just spells that I will be able to learn? Also: Does MP regenerate, or does my character have to buy a new magic item?
You can use any spell you've learned. The level of the spell is its difficulty to cast. You need a total roll of 50 for a level 0, and a 60 for level 1, otherwise you can read from the book and cast it slower. MP Regenerates over time, and quicker during resting periods.
Well, since you started the game as an apprentice, that means that you have the ability to pull the book out during combat. You can turn a fail into a success, but you take longer to cast it, and risk getting attacked while you can't dodge.
I have personal experience with this. (I'm playing an Apprentice character in another of ES's roleplays.) Let's say you try to cast a level 1 spell in battle. You know that you need to roll 60 or higher. You have to roll to cast the spell first. I rolled a measly 37 (Total. That's my roll plus my magic stat.) At this point, I could forfeit my action or I could Read From The Book. Since the spell that I want to cast is pretty important, I'll Read Form The Book. In gameplay terms, I sacrifice my Initiative and perform my action after everyone else. Reading from the book makes the spell automatically succeed. This can be used outside of battle, too. Story-wise, it just takes longer than casting the spell from memory. ^ Whoops. Ninja'd. However, my point remains valid.
Not a dumb question at all. There are two way to level up: If you're talking stats like HP/MP/SP/etc, you level up by gaining XP. This is pretty much like any other RPG. You kill things, you talk your way out of situations, what have you. It takes 100xp to level up initially (up to level 10). The amount of XP you gain per encounter is determined by your Background. For instance, Unicorns gain...I think it's 15% less XP than the other races (Alicorns gain 20% less, but that's neither here nor there). Earth ponies gain normal XP for an encounter, by the way. The other way to level up (and the way that makes you powerful in the long run) is by gaining Class Points. You gain CP by doing skills taht are related to your class. Think of it as Job Points al la Final Fantasy Tactics. Once you gain enough CP (for an Adventurer, it's 50) you can Class up. To do this you need to find a trainer and spend a number of in-game days training. Eight Star can tell you what you can class up as (I don't have much information on the class trees). New classes net you higher maximum HP, MP, WP, skills and the like. That's all I can think of at the moment. I hope it helped.
Between you, me, and all the people who read this: I live for this kind of thing. I think maybe I should've been a teacher.
This is, without even the merest shadow of a doubt, the most complicated RP I've ever been in and I've masterminded an RP where two characters have their entire histories surgically swapped, meaning that both the characters involved changed the other character's life just by existing within it in their place. Time Manipulation Plots are complex... So, can I take a look at the manual your reading your rules from, Eight Star, so that I can understand the game better? I never thought I'd actively seek out homework but I think this might be worth the effort. It would be great if there was an online version.
You mean helping people learn stuff? I love doing that too, since I'm a total board game geek, and I've been told that I "have real skill" in teaching people board games. Because that's going to be a realistic job. :derpe: But yeah, I know what you mean.
