    Prologue - Link's Awakening

    Hyrule Year 833, April 3rd 3:00

He was quite an unusual boy. All the other children of the forest had a guardian fairy. He, however, did not. This boy was always an outcast to the other children of the forest. He had very few friends. This boy went by the name of Link.

He went to bed every night wondering if the forest was all there was to life. None of the other children did. What made him so special? He could never leave the forest, for he would die. Was this it? Was he trapped there for the rest of immortality? He was only twelve. He shouldn't have to endure such stress. Yet he did. A forest boy by the name of Mido was always teasing him. He couldn’t take it anymore. Why was it so hard to make friends when the other children excelled at it?

That night in particular, the boy had a dream. It was a place he'd never seen. It was a large castle. It began to become cold. Shivers went down his spine. Then it started to rain a thick, heavy rain. Lightning began to strike, so intense and near, he jumped.

Suddenly, the drawbridge began to come down. It practically fell down because of the speed at which it was lowered. An evil-looking person came of the walls on a strange creature. This person was huge! Bigger than he had ever seen! This was the stuff of myths and legends, yet here it was before him. This person glared at the boy and gave an evil, twisted smile. His disgusting yellow teeth stuck out, giving a raunchy aroma. His hair was red. It was greasy and messy and not a pleasant sight at all. But perhaps the most unusual thing about this man was he had dark green skin. Maybe it was a disease or something but the boy didn’t know. The fellow on this strange, unfamiliar creature gave a lifted hand which began to glow. All of the sudden, there was a bright flash.

The guardian spirit of the forest was dying. His name was the Great Deku Tree. He looked nothing like he once did. His trunk and branches were a dark brown, almost a black. His leaves were brown and withered. His face was sickly-looking. So sickly-looking that it appeared he would not survive what had befallen on him. He knew there was only one person who could save him. However, there was only one way to convey a message: a fairy.

"Great Deku Tree?" asked the fairy in a sad tone, "You aren't looking too good."

"Navi, thou must heed to my words," said the Great Deku Tree, “There is a boy of the forest who hath no fairy. I depend on thee…go forth Navi. Bring the boy to me.”

“But, Great Deku Tree…I can’t leave you. Especially for…him!” Navi protested.

“Navi…listen to me. Thou art my most faithful fairy. Doeth this for me. He is a special boy, with that I agree. I need him, Navi. Go, Navi! The fate of Hyrule, neigh the world, depends upon thee!”

Five miles away, the princess of Hyrule was enjoying brunch. All her life, everything had been handed to her. She was always given the best Hyrule had to offer. She was by no means spoiled, but she did have it very nice compared to the common person. She was about to have a delicious brunch of Cucco eggs, a salad of Boko Baba leaves and Deku Nuts, and Lon Lon milk. The pleasant aroma filled the room. She, the King, Impa (her attendant), a few royal guards, and a strange man all sat down for brunch.

A guard stood up and said, “For all of you who are unaware, the king has scheduled this brunch for our guest. Sir, if you would, could you stand up and give your name?”

The strange man stood up and said simply, “My name is Dragmire. That’s all you need to know.”

The guard gave him a funny look and proceeded to sit down slowly.

Dragmire sat down and the feast began. There was nothing unusual about him really, besides his manner of doing things. He was well-groomed, his black hair slicked neatly back. His smile was rather pleasant. He was also quite tan, hailing from the Gerudo desert. This is what made Princess Zelda suspicious. Gerudo was a place of thieves and dark wizards. All of them were female except for one born every one hundred years. This man was king of the Gerudo. This is what worried her. But her father assured her nothing was wrong, so maybe she was worrying about nothing. She soon forgot about it and proceeded to eat.

After brunch, Zelda became tired. She went into her bedroom and lay down. It was well-lit in her room and decorated with shades of purple and pink and a splash of red. Impa guarded the door. Her eyes became heavy on the soft, well-cushioned bed and she soon fell asleep.

She had a dream. This dream was a mysterious one. It was a pleasant day in the land of Hyrule. The birds were chirping and the princess stood peacefully in a large plain. Butterflies hovered around the flowers without a care in the world. But storm clouds soon overtook the pleasant day. All the animals receded to their nests and holes. The wind began to blow. It began to rain, a terrible, harsh, cold rain. It chilled the princess to the bone. A massive thunderbolt struck the castle and set it on fire. The princess watched in pure horror and disgust as the place she once called home was burned to the ground. All hope seemed lost.

Off in the distance, however, she saw a figure. This figure came closer. The figure grew bigger. Soon she saw it was a man. This man was well-built and was carrying a well-crafted Hylian shield in one hand. In the other, however, was something. Perhaps it was sword? The dream wasn’t clear enough to make out exactly what he was holding. He lifted this item and suddenly the clouds receded in a bright flash of light.

The princess woke up in a cold sweat.

“Impa, I need you! I had another dream!”
