Anya was playing with the Berdling in Basel's lab a few days later, laughing deeply as it tried to climb up her arm.
Basel had gotten Alex's help to make the room more accommodating to the Berdling. He was sitting at his desk and reached into his bag, pulling out some small carrots. He turned to her. "Want some?"
She glanced at him before turning her head, trying to spot the creature as it darted around, trying to get on top of her head. "For me, or for the child?" she teased, raising an eyebrow.
The Berdling leaped and landed on her head and she fell back, laughing deeply. "No! He doesn't deserve carrots!" The door to the lab opened amidst the laughter and Stephanie walked in, her face severe.
Stephanie glanced at Anya before looking over at Basel. "Can we talk, please? Now." She left the lab and Anya raised her eyebrows at him. "You're in trouble."
Stephanie’s brows furrowed. “I left this decision to you, Basel,” she said sternly. “I need it soon, alright?”
She nodded and left him. Anya was in the room, lying on her back while the Berdling balanced on her knees.
She grinned, looking up at him. Her face fell when she noticed his expression, however, sitting up and making room for him. “Basel, what’s wrong?”
He looked up at her, his brows furrowed. "If you were given the option to stay here with me, or return to your planet and family.. What would you do?"
