He huffed. "Because you'll be warm until that point." *** She sat up, frowning as she quickly got out of bed. "Wait." She came up to him, kissing his cheek. "I'll miss you."
She frowned before letting go of him. “Fine.” *** He laughed lowly, looking a little brighter. “Mm. I’ll miss you too, Nas.”
She grumbled, resting her head on his shoulder. “What are you making?” *** He seemed hesitant to let go of her hand, but turned and left, closing the door behind him.
"Toast. How many pieces do you want?" *** She watched him go, before going to the kitchen to make food.
He raised an eyebrow. "I'll make you four." *** (Yoop!) Nascha had ventured out after securing the mice inside. She looked for Victor, careful to not get lost in the crowds and to stay a distance from sketchier areas.
She paused before nodding. “That’s probably better,” she admitted. “When are we leaving?” *** The crowds were streaming past her. She would eventually find Victor right at the edge of the water, the barriers being put up behind him. He was holding a weeping, muddy, soaking wet child and hurrying away from the river.
"After we eat," he said, putting the toast on a plate. "So we ought to hurry." *** Nascha frowned, starting over towards him. "Victor!"
She nodded, pulling her unruly hair back into a ponytail. “Thank you for making breakfast.” *** His head jerked up and he frowned. “Nascha?”
He nodded, starting to clean up. "Sure. It was easy." *** She came over, walking along with him. "Victor. Is everything okay?"
She stood up as well, picking up her plate. "Still. Are you still sore?" * * * The toddler was still wailing and Victor rubbed his back distractedly. "What are you doing here? It's not safe."
"A little," he admitted. "I'll be okay." *** "I wanted to see how you were," she said. "Don't worry about me. What's going on?"
She frowned, coming over and rubbing his back gently. "I'm sorry." * * * He looked very concerned, looking over his shoulder. "It's just... it's still really bad out here, Nas... I really think you should go home."
"It's okay," he said. "I'll be fine." *** Her brows furrowed, and she seemed hesitant to leave. "I.. Okay. I'll go."
Her frown deepened, but she said nothing, only moving to rub his back more thoroughly. *** They were interrupted by the toddler again. “I want Mommy!” he wailed, reaching back towards the river. Victor rubbed the child’s back, looking grim. “I know.” He leaned down and gave Nascha a quick kiss. “Please stay safe.”
He sighed, relaxing a bit. "I want you to be careful when we go." *** Her brows were furrowed and she looked worried, but started back to safety.
"You can't call me a liar," she said smugly. "You're in love with me now." * * * It took a long time for him to return home. The mice gathered around the door, patiently awaiting his return.
