3174) Go into a long lecture about where you think your life is going, only to realize that you are just talking to yourself.
If any of you have been following space news lately, you might have noticed a lot of activity over at Planetary Resources, Inc. - For those unfamiliar, Planetary Resources is the word's first real-life "space mining" company, and they are actually gearing up to start searching for, flying to, and them collecting resources from asteroids within our solar system, within the next decade. www.planetaryresources.com This whole concept obviously raises a whole ton of questions that I thought might be fun to talk about. Like, for example, becuause asteroids are made of raw materials that on earth would have sunk into the core due to gravity, those materials on the asteroid are in crazy large proportions out in space. What would bringing multiple tons of a "rare" element do to the way the word's economy works? And should the government be doing more to get ahead of this? Would this 1 asteroid mining company be allowed to have an over-night monopoly on any of the resources it brings home? Would earth-mining become too costly to continue? ... Like I said, there's a whole range of business and government and society questions rolled up into this idea of asteroid mining and it would be cool to know what you guys think will happen... All I can say for sure is this is going to change the world economy in a huge way. Getting back to the here and now, the company, Planetary Resources, is already beginning phase 1 of this business plan. They are building and launching dozens of space telescopes called ARKYDs that are going to search for valuable asteroids and start a database for tracking their locations. One of these ARKYDs actually has a different purpose; the company, to generate excitement about the cause, is running a kickstarter to fund one of the telescopes for public use as an educational tool. If you want to contribute, there are some really cool perks and it's running until the end of the month. (ARKYD Telescope Kickstarter)
