^ In his dream he dies and comes back as a brick, yes a brick. He is lodged in a wall in 1951, his exposed side faces the window of women he loves who turned him away years before. Day after day he stares into her room, into her life, he watches her come and go. He sees her with different men, he can not call out, can not move, he is embedded in cement. He can do nothing but silently and motionlessly watch. He sees her alone, sometimes she cries and holds her face in her hands. He is forced to watch endlessly. Sometimes she stares out the window and looks right at me. It is excruciating to looked directly into her eyes and know that she does not see him. She only sees a wall, shes leaves for weeks at a time and he wonders where she is, who shes with, he waits. All the other bricks are just bricks, they don't speak, they don't do anything at all. It is only his discontent that makes him believe he is alive at all, he has no arms or legs, he feels neither hot nor cold. He doesn't sleep, he does not hunger or thirst, his face is a small rectangle of smooth red clay, anonymous. Sometimes he thinks he is a man simply dreaming of being a brick, days pass and he can see enough to know he is indeed a brick in a large wall. One day she moves away, days turn into months and soon the first year of her absences arrives. In this time he has done nothing but make up every possibility of her return to my view a potential reality. Five years pass, he mind has begone to drift, he watches squirrels and birds. He sees a few traffic accidents, a robbery. Leaves explode into color and fall of the branches, but at night when everything is quiet he things of her. She is somewhere, he is here, always here. Not waiting, just here. Please do not let him live out his life untouched and tormented. Please help him escape the tragedy of himself. He envisions his face, contorted and agonized, wildeyed, he mouth frozen in mid scream, never able to say the truth. Forever trapped suspended inside solid black eternity. Embedded, silent, identical to the hundreds of others that surround him.
