The real reason is because we were worried that a rogue communist state with an unstable dictatorship headed by the son of a madman having nuclear weapons capability just MIGHT be a bad idea. Because they just MIGHT threaten us or others with said nuclear devices. North Korea has nothing. They are poor and starving. But now they have nukes, and nukes are power. Power gets you what you want...food, for instance. Once they developed a gun big enough to frighten other countries, they were bound to point it at somebody. I suppose it is a certain type of "country-profiling" and yes, it probably isn't strictly fair that we get to have nukes and they do not. But, we also can't launch our nukes just because the leader of our country feels like it today. So we said no, you can't have that toy. And they threw a tantrum. That be why.
If they manage to actually launch it that would be one of the single dumbest things ever. How many nukes do they have? 1-2, just a couple. Pretty sure they wouldn't make it 1/4 the way to the target. Then 'Merica invades and democracy takes over. Then a eagle lands on Kim's shoulder as he eats a hot dog, puts on a Yankees hat and sings the 'Merican national anthem.
This thread is remarkably we're 'Murica, nuke 'em all! I don't even know enough about this conflict to give a serious input but geeze guys! Some of you take really lightly on the subject of wiping a country off the face of the earth.
I think it's stupid. Countries should act like they are world leaders not 7th graders with a feud war.
It's easy to be an Arm Chair General when you only know of what the news is telling us. it's even harder to be an actual General or someone in Power that has to try to defuse or obliterate (depending on their choice) this situation. Sure it's easy to be anti-war or anti-military and say MAKE PEACE WITH NORTH KOREA! and its easy to be Pro-War or Pro-Military and go "NUKE THE CRAP OUT OF THEM!" We have to examine this and realize the price of this war. We have to be mature ourselves and realize that no one is acting like 7th graders but are being made to look that way by the News sources. My personal belief is, if North Korea throws the first punch, we should attack and turn the country into Ruble. Sure we may be killing an entire country, but maybe it's for the best? We can't have a screaming Toddler throwing Nukes around, with his "loyal" subjects just there, going "WE LOVE YOU KIM JUN-UN! WE WILL FIGHT TO THE DEATH FOR YOU!!!!" Do you know the people in North Korea (talking Civilians here) are brought up and raised, and even some may say, trained, to hate and attack anyone who isn't a North Korean or Ally of such. Sure some are smart enough to see through this and they seek refuge in South Korea, or abroad. The rest, they will try to stab our soldiers with tooth picks, toss rocks and knives, and anything they can, even pick up an AK from a fallen North Korean "Soldiers" and firing at us. This isn't a simple war of love the civies and kill the soldiers, its a TOTAL war or NO war type of idea where we have to target ALL or not go after NO ONE! So play Self righteous Arm Chair General or UN inspector, or Strategist all you want, but know its a bit hard and a bit more stressful and there are MORE key facts that we don't have or are missing. So, let me get this right Mr... you are saying, that it is ok for there to be countless civilian casualties, as long as it's not American civilians? Is that correct Mr? Well... I had this conversation in the past, I don't plan on getting in it again... but that kind of mentality is the kind of mentality that leads to holocausts and horrendous atrocities.
Reminds me of a game where this one mercenary guy finds a princess after the royal family is killed by a naton's army and he travels to some giant frickin' kingdom and gets their help and invades the attacking army's country and goes back to their home nation to kill the king and afterwards a tyrannical occupation of the country that lost from the kingdom happened that leads to genocide and hate towards them. In english: It's exactly like a Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn scenario. One country goes to war, gets help from another, and after the war is won, a terrible occupation phase occurs. We don't want that.
Actually, you miss quote me. I am saying that if we get into a war with North Korea, we will have to litterally fight the ENTIRE COUNTRY AND POPULATION because North Korean Civilians will be TRYING to kill AMERICAN and SOUTH KOREAN soldiers, because NORTH KOREAN civilians are TAUGHT throughout THEIR lives to kill ANYONE who tries to liberate.. I mean INVADE their country.
It also leads to every country in the world hating the U.S. By the way Flaming Ashes, you mentioned we may be armchair generals that only know what the news tells us. So...how do you know all North Koreans hate Americans and will fight to the death for the North Korean communist regime? The same regime that is doing so well that half its people are starving. The same regime that is starting wars the people of the country most likely don't care about because they're too busy just trying to get through the day. Let me ask you a question. Do all Americans love President Obama? Do all Americans believe everything their government tells them? Then why would you think all North Koreans are such mindless sheep? Maybe...because that's what you see in the news?
Most people in North Korea aren't mindless sheep. They just act like that in public so they aren't shot. It's as simple as that.
(I won't mention any names, but some of the posts on this thread are so stupid that it actually HURTS.) North Koreans are not trained to HATE the United States. They are taught that we are a poor, backwards country that is so poorly governed that our citizens are literally dropping dead in the streets of illness and starvation. They are led to believe that most Americans are homeless, living in tent cities and relying on food and blankets donated by the kindly North Korean government. North Koreans are, in fact, taught to PITY us.
Sorry to just barge into the conversation, but I just want to see if I got this straight... If North Korea fires a nuke, then there are several reasons why we cannot respond in kind. Assuming North Korea has the range and accuracy to hit the US (I've heard different things from different sources, so I'm not 100% sure), our anti-missle system is rather ineffective. Kim Jong Un's mental state is currently questionable and unpredictable. This is friggin' scary. Also to weigh in on the conversation regarding the civilians and their beliefs of their government, I think I remember back when Kim Jong Il died seeing footage of a bunch of North Korean people out in the streets crying. This could show that the people of the country have strong beliefs in their government which could promote any number of reactions to Americans in their neighborhoods. However, this could just be more North Korean propaganda and I'm completely wrong. I'm afraid I'm a bit under-educated on the subject. This is all that I know and I would love to learn more.
M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction. The principle of 'Treat others how you wish to be treated.' It's like an unwritten rule if they do fire a nuke and it hits us then we fire a nuke only we aim better. I don't know if you were stating that we can't retaliate or stating what you've read but that is the reason we can retaliate.
When I say 'in kind' I mean we can't fire a nuke back at them because, as stated before, they're too close to our allies. Who knows how the nuclear radiation will be carried and there are chances that it could affect South Korea and China. Not saying we can't counter attack at all, but all alternative methods mentioned in this thread, as far as I've read, have been met with some form of criticism.
Because North Koreans don't have the freedoms that we do. North Koreans don't have an open web system, nor an open news system. From day one, they are force fed propaganda and raised to believe this. You may gave also seen this in say Nazi Germany in the 1935(?) - 1945. The ones that see through it, are shot, inprisoned or become refuge to other countries. Thats how I know - - Auto Merge - - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmQoBehgr8w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGqQ3rA2lKM ^---- Because North Koreans are Taught to pity us.....*sarcasm* Listen, they are taught to hate us, not pity us. As much as I want to help North Korean Civies (and I;ve been asking this and get the same answer) North Korean Civies want to destroy us as much as their leader. The ones who see through this smoke and mirrors ,again, seek refuge in other countries. BTW I still find it funny how NK uses American media as footage for their propaganda!
