My favorite movie/s all depend on what I'm in the mood for.

Horror: H. P. Lovecrafts Dagon or The Ring
Science Fiction: Star Wars (all) I tend to be an Imperialist. In the first 3 the biggest drawback is JarJar. In the last 3 it is Ewoks.
Sci Horror: Event Horizon - Hell Raiser in space!
Action Adventure: The Die Hard series or any James Bond
    Fantasy: Lord of the Rings
Comedy: Liar Liar with Jim Carry

Science Fiction: Star Trek (The new one.)
    SciFi Horror: Cube

    Comedy: Fan Boys.

    Sci-Fi; 2001: A Space Odyssey
    Action; Die Hard
    Superhero; Superman: The Movie
Adventure; Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Comedy; The Blues Brothers
    Fantasy; LoTR Trilogy
    War; Saving Private Ryan
    Foreign; Downfall (Der Üntergang)

As for my all-time favourite, it's definetly 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This is the movie that started my fascination with Space. It's a dark, fascinating film that makes you wonder what it's really like beyond the infinite. The thought-provoking plot is outstanding, the (few) characters are developed perfectly and the special effects are the best I've ever seen in my entire life. This is, without a doubt, my absolute favourite movie, and Stanley Kubrick's crowning achievement.

Tough call. Maybe the Back to the Future trilogy? It hits me right in the nostalgia in the best ways possible. Making me long for the way things were in my childhood in the late 80s/early 90s, causing me to miss the 50s despite not being around back then, and reminding me of the crazy stuff we envisioned the future might hold.

Being a sappy, empathetic guy doesn't help in this regard, I have to say...

Not much happens in these movies that isn't significant later or is referenced again, so they're pretty clever too.

This is how I feel about most sci-fi movies. Scale models of starships and stuff added a little more believability for me and space combat scenes felt more tense and exciting, despite CGI opening far more possibilities and making matters easier.

If I had to choose, I'd go with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Die Hard, or Wreck-It Ralph.
