I don't get it either either maybe much like with Anti Bronies and haters they just might not have anything better to do.
Kay, so my friend Leilani said that her parents are going away for a while nearing the end of this year and she wants me to visit. She lives in Tullahoma, (Tennessee) She herself was a Californianianianian girl and is such a great laugh, very open minded, pleasant and has offered me accomodation and being fed and taken out places. Trouble is, Flights are expensive, (But I could save up) I'm really tempted to go, but I'm actually quite paranoid about travelling to Tennessee when she complains about rednecks and violent political and religious arguments in her area all the time. WHAT DO?
I hate the South because it's how the rest of the world views America as a whole. The most offensive thing you could call me is a redneck.
Where did that term originate? I mean, what does it even MEAN if you look at it literally. Redneck? All I can think about is sunburn. Seriously. I mean, my father gets TERRIBLE sunburn on the back of his neck in the summer! So I don't understand why it's a term used to define southern american bigots that live on ranches and drive offland trucks and chew grass. Okay so that's generalising a tad. I'm just confused because I have no idea where the term came from and why it means what it does.
OOOOOHHHHHH. Now I understand. Just goes to show how much I actually know about Southern American terminology. It amazes me how something initially regarded as a positive term is now being used in negative connotations. I'm also amused that it originally was used in Scotland! I'm glad that the sunburnt neck played a part in it aswell (to save me from looking like a fool.) to describe someone hardworking because of all those hours labouring in the sun. I've learned something new. Thanks Yami! P.S I love that Fluttershy you're wearing.
That's not a whole lot considering our population. Only about 0.05% of our total population. Also, that's the region people are referring to when they talk about "The South". So for all intents and purposes, they are the same in this case. Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2
I know OP probably wanted this thread to revolve around 'Murica, but he should have been more specific. I will now continue to discuss the southern hemisphere I was an exchange student for a year, and I quite enjoyed it. They aren't all bigots, you know, even though they for some reason still disallow gay marriage. I experienced teenage love down there, and made many great friends.
My family comes from the southern United States - Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. But, I'm born and raised Californian, and have no connection to the south other than my parents were born there. Both my parents reflect the region they were raised in in the most negative ways, and I grew up with a pretty negative image of the region. I haven't spent much time there personally; spent a summer down there twice is all, really. So I can't really say much about the "average" southerner. I have noticed they tend to elect some of the stupidest politicians in the country, although that's not limited to the south. But they do seem a bit louder about it. As for the southern hemisphere, well, some of my friends are from the southern hemisphere, but they still freak me out! How on earth can they hang on from the underside of the planet?!
You got me there - we also elected Reagan and a few other weird-o's. And now I live next door in Nevada, where we elect idiots as a requirement. I didn't mean to imply the south was the only region that elects the dumbest people, just that it seems to be at every level sometimes. But I probably shouldn't generalize, should I? Ah, well, I may as well stick my foot all the way in my mouth, I suppose. As an after thought, I'd like to point out that many of my fellow American's seem to hate California on principle. Maybe I'll start a thread called, "Why do people hate California?"
Do you really have that little amount of people in your entire country? There are more people living in my state than that, and I live in one of the smallest states in the US (population wise).
Actually, that's exactly what I hear. This isn't a one-sided attack or issue; I get to hear all about the "Northern War of Aggression" and how people in the North are so stuck-up every time I visit the Southern United States. Zephyr summed it all up quite nicely. Exactly.
Texan speaking here: We don't hate you, we just want you to stop moving here! (Same goes for you, Northeastern states!)
Nobody hates the south more than a northerner moved south. Not because of the people though. Because it's April and it's 90 degrees outside. >>;
If you move down here expecting it NOT to be 90 degrees in April, you are a misguided fool/idiot. This April was the first one I remember that it hasn't been consistently above 80 degrees.
Actually, the temperature in Florida has been steadily increasing since I moved here, it having an average temperature in April of 2000 around 70ish degrees and in 2004 75ish. This is the first year it's consistently hit above the 85 degree mark. But what does this misguided fool know?
I don't really consider Florida southern though...I'm talking more Texas east to Georgia and up to Virginia, you know, the area most people consider the South
