I think that Dashie's the most common to non-bronies because of the "rainbow" thing. My family and friends were always going on about "pink rainbow ponies" and it really irked me. Never seen a pink rainbow pony, and I'm mighty sure they haven't either. She is, however, the "coolest" and thus most exposed to people outside the fandom. As for me... I really don't know anymore. She used to be favorite pony, but now I'm leaning towards Fluttershy and feel rather dirty.
I can think of four reasons 1. She's loyal to her friends (Element of Loyalty) 2. She's performed a Sonic Rainboom three times 3. She's awesome 4. She's more than likely the pony responsible for getting Bronies to watch the show in the first place and all of this is coming from a Rarity fan so yeah let that sink in for a little bit.

She's on so much merchandise because she looks so good on it I guess. She's the most colorful, obviously, so people probably gravitate towards her appearance more than they would the other ponies. I have to say I actually was guilty of this. I found My Little Pony earrings and I bought the Rainbow Dash pair even though she's not my favorite. They were just the most eye catching. My favorite is Fluttershy but Rainbow Dash does look so fun and exciting on shirts, jewelry, etc. I do have lots of pony toys of Fluttershy, just not other things. Oh! I'll also buy anything with Princess Luna even though she lacks a lot of color. Her dark theme looks great on merch too though. The pony I NEVER see on stuff is poor Twilight. I take care of kindergarteners who like the show and none of them even know Twilight's name. They all love Rarity and Rainbow Dash. I never see just Rarity on merch either though.
The thing I like most about Rainbow Dash is her loyalty. Loyalty means everything to me, so obviously when I see a pony who's whole deal is about loyalty ... I'm gonna favor her a bit more. Other than that I personally like the color scheme. Her personality is the sort of "Yeah I've got a big head but I'd do whatever I can for my friends" type. It's really about personal preference. Maybe there's something about Rainbow Dash that's so appealing as a character to a lot of people. Rainbow Dash is my personal favorite Mane6 character. Though my two favorite characters out of everypony are Vinyl Scratch and Octavia Melody. I'm not sure why because it's the artistic aspect that appeals to me and there are plenty of other artistic ponies. I just like the DJ and the Cellist.
What's not to like? She looks good, she's funny, she has confidence in her self, she's sexy... well she is..
Rainbow is my least favorite pone in the show. She's annoying and a show-off most of the time. (My friend also wants to punch her because of her voice).
I like her based on her element 'loyalty' since that's what I relate to most... Used to like the tomboy thing.. But I'm more of a fan of the background ponies.. If I were to pick from the mane 6 though.. It would have to be AJ. Actually when I look at it. In someways, I think RD and AJ have the wrong elements.. It should be AJ who should represent 'Loyalty' and RD who should have 'Honesty'
My mom said something about this the other day... I don't know how true it is or how ,uch it relates. But I really do think she's become the mascot of the show, atleast in the eyes of non-bronies. As for how many bronies like her the most, I'd have to say she seems to be averged around the other mane six. As for why I like her? Well I can relate to her, (lazy, bragger (or whatever its called) competetive, and I have a soft side but I rarley show it. I'm pretty much like her, except I'm fat.) but its also the fanfiction stuff that speaks to me (my little dashie, scootadash shipping, etc) as the show kind of leaves a first impression of her as a lazy show-off.
Maybe why she is so well liked is because her design looks the best. She does have a nice color scheme and it probably catches the eye the fastest.
Little girls like the pink and rainbow pony, and older fans of the show either love her or hate her. I think many people are changing their attitude to her because the writers can't seem to handle a headstrong, confident character without making them either a villain (Trixie, Discord kind of) or a b*tch. same here. thought ive always put AJ first becasuse she so damn cute with those freckles, dat hat, and a country accent. also like others i aspire to have her work ethic: something my dad has and I dont. I think she's an interesting character, and her relationship with Fluttershy is especially so. There is so much potential to write about the two because of their conflicting personalities, yet they seem like they could be "honorary sisters." I'd also see Fluttershy as the kind of pony RD would be around when she doesn't want to be her usual bold and heroic self. She's not my favorite (that spot will always be reserved for Fluttershy) but she's up there.
Because she's a strong, butch, fearless female character. One of the reasons everyone likes this show so much.
