She looked over her shoulder before brushing the sand on her lower legs gently. “Would you ever live here?”
Her back was to him and he would see that line of freckles that trailed down her back. Her golden hair had dried from the water, a little messy, but soft and curling slightly at the ends. Her brass ear cuffs, tiny and intricate, gleaned in the evening light from the shops. She pulled her knees to her chest, looking out across the dark water.
He was watching her, his head tilted slightly. His eyes traced the curve of her shoulder, flickering over the freckles. Her hair; he noted how it looked soft, and the gentle shine of her ear cuffs. He flushed, looking back at the fire.
There was a soft pause before she leaned back against his chest, looking up at him. “Thanks for spending the day with me,“ she said. “I know you would’ve probably rather to go ahead and look for the next part of the key.”
She laughed a little and he would feel her leaning into his touch. “My life’s mission to find you a nice demon girl remains unsatisfied,” she mused.
She laughed a little. “Why not?” she asked, although she sounded genuinely curious. “Don’t you want someone to travel the world with when this is all over? A partner in crime? A companion? Everyone wants that.”
She rolled her eyes playfully, but he would easily be able to see the frown that crossed her face. "Not me, Z. Someone you like. Someone you could settle down with, you know?"
She looked at the fire, her expression clearly troubled and uncertain before she moved over towards their sleeping area. "I think I'm going to go to bed," she said quietly.
