He could tell by the way she set her mouth that she didn't quite believe that, looking up at him with wide eyes. She had dark circles under her eyes and her ears were back as she watched him, her brow knitted together in her trademark anxious expression.
She looked down at the coins before looking up at him again, pressing her lips together. "Money runs out," she said quietly. "And we could be doing this for years, Z..."
She sighed a little, looking up at him, her brows furrowed. "I suppose... we could return to the farm if things got really bad," she ventured.
She looked up at him with a small frown. "You're a good guy, Zer," she said softly, folding her hands in her lap.
She tilted her head, watching him. "You're good to me," she replied, returning her attention to his food.
She laughed a little, shaking her head. "All the stories that I grew up hearing," she mused, considering the flames. "I have a hard time believing that they're the same person."
