Ok, I have really been in the mood to watch an anime as of late. I've always been extremely picky when it comes to stuff like this so pretty much most anime that exists I don't really like. Bear in mind that I'm in no way attempting to bash anyone's opinions, but only to express my own.

Here's some pointers that will help you out some...

    Animes I like
    -Dragon Ball (Z)
    -Samurai Champloo
    -Cowboy Bebop
    -Gun X Sword
    -Trigun
    -Full Metal Alchemist

    Animes I hate
    -Elfen Lied
    -Higurashi
    -Hellsing
    -Azumanga Daioh
    -Basically anything cutesy
    -Neon genesis: Evangelion

    Further Notes

-While DBZ is my favorite show of all time, I've yet to find any DBZ inspired anime that I like. (I consider shows like Naruto, Bleach, and Yu Yu Hakasho to fall under this category).
-I like my animes to end. I prefer when they are about 25-30 episodes.
-I like being able to watch them with english dubs.
-I don't like horror anime as I find it extremely gimmicky. Like In shows like Higurashi, Elfen Lied, or Paranoia agent. It's almost as if the creators just try to force the characters in to the most miserable situations possible in hopes of making it interesting.
-I like the show to have some sort of realistic emotional/sentimental quality about it, without overdoing it like some shows do.

Of Malak's list, I recommend Outlaw Star, Code Geass, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fist Of The North Star, and Lupin The 3rd. High School of The Dead is on that list, which I think is an amazing anime, but if you don't like an anime like Higurashi, you probably won't like HOTD.

If you like Mech Anime, Gundam is the way to go, I'd start with Wing or G, as those are my two favorites, other Mech animes that I'd recommend are The Big O, and Full Metal Panic. You also may want to check out an anime called "Is This A Zombie?" It's pretty funny.

    Death Note.

It's got a strong and emotional story, a small dozen of likeable characters you learn to genuinly care about, and it doesn't go on for too long. I believe the full series is about 37 episodes long.

Honestly, I do not like Death Note. I was never able to get into it.

Well like, I'm not even all that in to anime. Not a lot at least. I can only really get in to it if it appeals to very specific interests. My point is, any opinion is going to be biased to some degree...calm down...

P.S:You actually listed a few that I forgot to put on the "like" list. (Witch Hunter Robin and Gurren Lagann)

You can find my list in the General Anime Thread I created, it's pretty large.

Personally I dislike shows like DBZ, Naruto and Bleach. They run on for far too long and one fight scene takes 3 episodes to get through, not to mention they're cheesy and juvenile.

Two really good horror/drama/suspense anime that will change your opinion of the genre would be Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary) and Another.

Two adventure/fighting anime that I think might fit into your "likes" category would be D. Gray Man and Soul Eater. Soul Eater being the better of the two, imo. It's kinda like Bleach, just not terrible. You might also like Chrome Shelled Regios, it kinda has a Naruto/Trigun feel to it.

Although HoTD is awesome, it's very different from the other anime in your list. I don't usually recommend it to others, especially those who aren't that into anime, because the extreme amount of fanservice usually turns them off.

Is This a Zombie? (Kore wa Zombie Desuka) is another that, while awesome, doesn't seem to fit in with the others you rec'd, and because of sheer ridiculousness I prolly wouldn't recommend to the novice/casual anime viewer.

The FMP series is an extremely good anime, although I personally prefer Eureka 7. I didn't recommend any mech animes though, because he said he didn't like NGE.

To OP, you could also check out Rurouni Kenshin, Yu-Yu-Hakusho, Samurai 7, Inuyasha, Kekkaishi, etc. They're all your standard [as] fighting/adventure fare, but they'd prolly be more your speed.

Oh, lord...so many to choose from. I kinda just want to settle on one as of right now. Rurouni Kenshin and Samurai 7 seem up my alley...

If you're going to choose between those two, I'd go with Rurouni Kenshin. Which also goes by the name Samurai X.

It's much better than Samurai 7 imo, back when it originally aired on [as] I loved it. The graphics for both those anime are a bit tired now though, seeing as how they are now prolly 10 years old or more. But they are prolly comparable to early DBZ eps, so it might not bother you the way it does me.
