Alright, this is a first fanfic I did of MLP:FiM and first one I did in a very long while. The summary is a portal opens up in the middle of New England town and gathers the attention of the local populace and country. The Government sends its best scientists and soldiers to figure it out. Not one of them are able to get through the portal and are tossed from it when they try to enter. So they send in any volunteers from the local area. Thats when our main character comes in and he is able to go through the portal to find it leads to a weird land where, he finds familiar but didn't recognize right off the bat until greeted by a pony. I want you all to poke at it and just give me things I could do to change it up a bit and make it more interesting. I want feedback, lots, what confused you, what do you think I did wrong in explaining or doing. There is some dark humor nothing bad at all, and its hard to find also. I would like to explore Equestria through a humans stand point with a pony guide and kinda of look at it at a different light that the show doesn't really touch apon and explore the economic, social, and justice systems of the land of Equestria if any. It is written in a first person view of everything, and I did base it off of my life and personality a bit, more or less because it would be easier on me to write a story like this with an easier narrative instead of creating John Doe and his personality and daily life rituals. So without further ado here is "The Portal" by me. Prologue As I look onto these fillies playing in the field and the older ponies and such hard at work, or also just playing, I remember how I became a welcomed guest to this world. I left my old life behind when I came over, and although I keep my original human form, I feel as if they see me as one of them. I really guess I should start this story from the beginning of it all…. It was about a year ago, this portal formed in the middle of my town. It made headlines, and it was at the attention of National Security and the world of science. Many people looked at it, the portal, big enough to fit a human through and it had a bright white light to prevent anyone from seeing into it. It was, of course, on lock down, security fences, guards, and a lot of scientists and national guardsmen just walking around it. After the third week I had lost concern over it, mainly because nothing had come from it. chapter 1 Everyone was debating at what it was, the military thought it was something from a lab from China. Scientist thought it was a warm hole to another part of the universe. The crazies thought it was the government testing portal technologies. I honestly didn't care, I was content on my normal boring life. I wake up, go to school, go home, and that was it until the weekend. The weekends I was usually either looking for a job, doing a JROTC event or at my NSCC Drill I usually fit a MLP episode into this. Pretty happy with it, and very bored with it allAbout two months in, I gained interest in it after hearing about how scientists and soldiers that would try to enter, would be through out of the portal. This was a rumor at first, so I took it with a grain of salt. About a week after I heard this rumor, a conference from the head scientist, what was his name.. doctor..doctor.. Ummm.. I forget his name honestly. He was a complete prick, that's all I know. Anyways, he was talking about how the portal is only taking a certain person, and how much work his group of scientists were doing on this portal. That is when the announcement was made. They were going to be taking volunteers to see who could go through. They only wanted the local towns people first. I thought it would be interesting so I decided to go check it out. When I got down there I found my entire bloody town was there. In one line, there were people of all types. The soldiers kept everyone in line, the stress was in the crowd. Everyone wanted to be that one guy who could travel this thing, but not everyone was brave enough for it. Rumors flew around, "What if this is a one way trip, what if this will lead us to another universe dominated by RATS!?" I chuckled at all these ideas, I honestly didn't care, I just wanted to see what was on the other side.After about a few days and a ton of people either leaving the line or being rejected by the portal I made it to the portal area. I was tired as it was, I had little sleep, and I ate chips.. What a good diet.The guard motioned me into the area where they housed the portal, there I was greeted by the main Doc, he gave me the run down on everything and if I was the one who could go through the portal, I would examine the area and come back if possible for a debriefing on what was there. I accepted the terms and conditions of my death. I stepped foot into the portal and everything went white. I felt a thousand burning suns and a force on my body equivalent to a jet fighter going straight up from a horizontal flight. As you could've guessed I passed out. When I woke, I woke up in a field of trees, apple trees to be exact. I didn't recognize anything, I got up to my feet just to lose my chip dinner. It was night, and the sky was dark with a moonlit ground. I decided to check my surroundings and find where I was. I hoped the portal was near me also… After following a trail for a good ten minutes I came to a small town.. No one was in sight or on the streets. It was weird, the town looked as if it was a world war 2 era buildings in the Europe country side. I could only hope I was not sent back in time. I looked for a place of importance, a bakery. I thought that be a could place to find out some information on the local people. As you can tell, it was late and I was still tired and sick from my trip, so I slept next to the place. I woke to whispers and a poke to the side that felt like a hoof. I awoke quickly to find myself in the middle of a group of ponies, Pegasus and unicorns. All had different marks on their afts. I could only guess on why this looked familiar, until a familiar voice was heard behind me. "HELLO WEIRD LOOKING STRANGER!" the voice said, as I turned around to be greeted by the smiling face of Pinky Pie. I fainted. Chapter 2 I woke up in a bed in a weird room. It looked as if it was carved into a tree, this made me feel as if I was a prisoner. I was worried. I took a notice in my surroundings, a glass of water on a table stand next to me, noted very important. Books, lots and lots of books. Then I noticed a pile of scrolls in the corner of the room, my curiosity caused me to get up and go over to them. I picked one up and read it, "Dear Twilight Sparkle, I will be in town later this evening to see this strange guest you speak of. Please treat it kindly. I will have my royal guard with me to make sure nothing happens, so don't worry yourself on my safety. I'm sure it will be a kind creature." I was confused now, as all the signs right now pointed that I was in Equestria. I couldn't believe it though as it should be impossible. I needed answers so I descended the stairs to find Twilight, maybe she could tell me what is going on. As I was coming down the stairs, I heard her talking to someone… I was hoping it was only spike. "Spike, you need to let the others know I can't play today, I have to make sure our guest is comfortable. Can you go let them know for me?" Spike responded: "OF COURSE TWILIGHT! I WILL GO ALERT RARITY RIGHT NOW!" I waited for the door shut before I came down fully. "He really likes rarity doesn't he?" I said as an ice breaker. Twilight jumped out of her skin before she recomposed herself and spoke. "Yes, he does, but there is nothing I can do… um.. Can I ask how you knew that? Can I actually ask who.. Or what you are?" She asked with curiosity, I responded "You may ask, I knew Spike liked Rarity by.. Ummm.. Just by how he responded. (I couldn't have told her she was a show.. She wouldn't believe it) I am a human, from another land, far from this one. My name is James… I came through a portal in the Apple Orchid." Her face was with shock "A portal you say? I made a portal a few nights ago and it hasn't closed! Not yet atleast.. The Princess will love this!" Twilight said with excitement. Then I heard a very gently, and kind voice, I knew who it was. "What will I be excited to hear Twilight?" It was the princess, Twilight jumped again and bowed, I followed suit. "About the portal I accidentally made, and our guest is what came through it!" I stood up "Hello Princess Celestia" I reached my hand out for a handshake, both of her guards stomped their hoofs, causing me to retract. "Sorry, that's how we say hello in my world" The Princess just smiled and giggled "Guards, you may stand down, he doesn't seem like he will be hurting anyone. I would like to hear about your world, and about you and your family and everything!" I spent many hours explaining to her human history, from the beginning to the recent present. I spoke of our great wars and our worst sicknesses. I shared with her everything I could about my old world. I explained to her my family and friends, and how my Father and Brother were soldiers and how I wanted to become a soldier like them, to help protect everyone and everything I love. I had left out the show though, as again this would be distraught to them. The whole time she nodded and sipped on tea, she was the essence of kindness I could only hope to be by 20 percent. When I finished she asked Twilight were the portal was, and Twilight told her, and we went to the portal. She examined it, and she walked around it. After about 10 minutes of this, she spoke "I had done this once before, it had last a week, and the visitor could come and go as it pleased. I remember someone like you coming through once. I gave him a option, You can go or stay. He went. I'm giving you the same choice. You have about 2 days to decide. If so, then you may go back and say bye to everyone and come back with all you'll need." She said this with a serious tone I never heard before. My eyes were wide, and excitement filled my heart. But at the end of the day I had to actually think about this. Chapter 3 I told them my choice on that night. I wanted to stay, I had nothing that interested me in that world I came from. They gave me a day to do what I needed. I went through the portal. Again I was unconscious when I came back to this world, I awoke, with the scientist in my face. The questions my god, where they the most intelligent things I was ever asked. Seriously, I was impressed. After I told them everything, they nodded, and wanted me to go back to gather more info. I had left out the part of me not returning on purpose. They sent me home so I could collect my possessions for the journey. I was escorted home by national guardsmen to protect me from the media and crazy people. It was rough. Once I got home they stayed outside. I entered my house, surprised with almost all of my family, they had the look on there faces as if I had woken from a ten year coma. They all hugged me and told me how proud of me they were and how much they loved me. I started to tell them of what I had witnessed. This is where the hard part came in, I had to tell them. I still remember my speech, "I told her that I wanted to stay. So she granted it. I.. I'm sorry guys, but its for the best. I love you all, I do, but at the end of the day I'm stuck in this hole that I call life. I don't belong in this world, and I know this. Please, remember me for who I am,a nd remember I don't want any tears shed for me. I have to pack now…" I left the room, everyone was in silence. I grabbed my two duffle bags and started to pack. I slipped in all my books, my plain white t-shirts, my plain brown ones, and even my black ones. All my boots and work uniforms. I snuck my blades in them along with picture and towels, with blankets. I walked with a small audience of eyes on me. I slowly trudge out and took a few pictures off the wall. One of me and my brother, another with the whole family. I had a tear roll down my face. I gave everyone one last look, with a smile. They smiled back, and we all knew this was for the best. I gave one last group hug, and I departed. I was escorted back to the area of the Portal. There was a crowd of people, I was worried, what had happened, I had thought no one cared. In the crowd I saw a familiar face, it was my ex. This had caused me to pause. The guard tried to push me along, concerned with how the crowd was getting wild. I slowly walked towards the portal, with her just watching me, with a saddened look on her face. The main doc was yelling at everyone, "WHO LEAKED THIS INFORMATION! WHO!?" I came and tapped him on the back, and he looked at me with a kind expression, masking his anger. "Oh, its you, listen you got little time before they come barging in, you must go now!" I gave a silent nod and stood in front of the portal. With one last look back at everyone and thing, I gave a wave and walked through the portal. The travel was less painful, but I did find myself waking up at night again, with my duffle bags on me. There was Twilight and Apple Jack, both staring at me. "Brought enough?" Twilight chuckled. I stood up and just gave a smile. "This is my friend Apple Jack, her and her brother built you a house on the ranch. You'll stay there for as long as you wish." Twilight said with a smile, Apple Jack was just in shock from what I could tell. They both showed me to my new residence, where I thanked them and I unpacked. Epilogue. Now here I am, stronger and healthier then ever. I do odd jobs around town, make my bits like any other ponies. I have my own group of pals who I hang with, Ill even pay Twilight a visit every now and again. I have done so much around here, and yet I still have a wonder as if I'm missing something back in my old world, but that's for another time.
