So I've been thinking of writing a fan-fic where Celestia has gone mad with power and created an absolute empire. The strategic and political superpowers of each city gather in Ponyville to discuss the inevitable collective revolution/rebellion. The Mane Six are of this breed, Rainbow Dash is an expert flyer; Twilight is a known strategist; Fluttershy is an expert on covert ops and infiltration; Pinkie Pie is famous for rallying troups at "The Battle of Canterlot" (an infamous skirmish resulting from Celestia's initial bout of tyranny); Applejack served alongside Luna in the service of a small, ill-fated group of rebels nearer to the rise of Celestia's Empire; Rarity designs weapons, armor, etc. Personally, I find it may be a tad too generic. Thoughts?
I don't know if this idea's generic: while I've been thinking of a similar scenario recently, and you get all the Lunar Republic/Solar Empire stuff, the actual idea for the plot seems pretty original. I say go for it, it sounds like it could be really interesting.
to be honest iv seen one or two fanfics about something similer to this and a few pics on devianart also about celestia going mad with power but i cant really say its too generic yet so its up to you if you want to do it
In my opinion this sort of fiction might be a rather good one however this is a every comment idea because of fan art. If i were to make such a fiction i would have the mane six divided between the 2 forces remember return to harmony part 1 where apple jack see's she and her friend's friendship end you could play off that to why they are divided if i were to have a team id say rarity Rainbow Dash and Apple jack are with celestia and twilight pinkie and fluttershy are with luna. You could also bring in a nutral factor into the equation like a antagonist to which helps the "good guys" win but just my throughs
I haz some thought, to go mad with power for no reason is kinda silly. I mean she's ruled for 1000 years by her self. If she wanted she could have taken full control anytime. Here is my idea to give Celestia reason for power and a way to start the fight. Most of the threats to equestria have been small, NNM, discord, QOC. They all focused on one target. Instead you need a bigger force, say griffons. Make up a back story to griffons and ponies coming up to a war, maybe luna's hesitation caused a town to be over run and slaughtered by griffions, then have the war. Now that we have that, we've got a foothold for Celestia to see Equestira can't be run by her and luna. She tries to take full control by having luna executed. Some ponies see this say a good thing, some see it as bad. Now you have 2 factions, I think the mane 6 should split but it's your choice. Anyway, back to the idea. Somepony yells out that luna needs a trial first, Celestia response that waiting is what caused that town to be slaughtered. Execution happens and a bunch of ponies stand protest outside of canterlot castle. Celestia gets tired of it and stands guards to get rid of them anyway they see fit. Guards open fire on unarmed ponies. The unarmed ponies fall back and get rallied by pinkie. They counter attack the castle. So now you have a reason for celestia wanting power, 2 factions to fight a war and the battle of canterlot. I know you wanted to use luna, so maybe execute candance instead. I just generally don't like the idea of Celestia being tyrant queen. At worst, she can be interpreted as a mischeivious jokester in the show. The whole thing seems out of character to me, but w/e makes the readers/writers happy, I say. Don't listen to me if I'm the only one with this opinion, because I'm not the writer, and I'm only one reader.

Ye-e-es, but I think it would be rather difficult to justify her making that turn at all. Immortal creatures/beings tend to be very set in their ways, and seeing how she's ruled the last 1000 years (more, counting her time ruling alongside Luna), she probably wouldn't do that. You'd need something like Discord corrupting her to turn her into...that. I totally did not suggest something from a fanfiction I just read. Nope. Nothing of the sort. Anyways, putting my un-creativity aside, I just think it requeres more than one mistake on Luna's part to make Celestia think that executing her (or anypony else) was a good idea. Like I said before, she'd have to be infected with evil magic or something. Or you could just put it in an alternate dimension, that's an easy way to fix it. I don't know, all I really had to contribute was my opinion, not on this fanfic idea, but on the Solar Tyrant idea. Then again, I am most like Twilight, so I would overestimate Celestia. Again, IDK.

I'd go with the mayor. She seems a little old and crazy. Maybe she could gain some power and go insane with it.
Uh... correct me if I'm wrong, but Celestia has crowned herself god-queen of Equestria, does control the universe, and has a picture of the sun shining out of her butt. How is she not already power mad?
Being powerful is not the same as being power-mad. Plus, when did she gain control over the universe? Last time I checked, Celestia had major trouble fighting against one little changeling queen.
