Great Britain. In my experience, (from both sides of the transaction) tipping isn't really expected in most places. People might tip at a nice restaurant or something, but it's not just an added expense of the meal, like it seems to be in the States. I've always kinda wondered how that came about over there...
Waitresses over here tend to work for peanuts. Their wage is usually 2-3 dollars lower than the minimun wage, because of tips. Idk if customer tipping lead to lower wages due to capitalist greed, or vice versa.
Yeah, over here waiting staff get paid the same as most other service workers; tips are an actual bonus, as they should be, to encourage better service.
That penny thing. I've done that before. >.>
Yeah, this business of paying workers less than minimum wage is... well, a word I would happily use anywhere but the forum.
The penny thing is a funny idea, but I have to say that it can really be harsh in reality. Tips are like 'thank you' in my opinion, and it's just insulting. In the states, people know when you don't leave a tip, it means you don't think they did well. Leaving a penny just is petty. Either leave a tip, or don't. I work at a stand, and my tips are a pretty major part of my income, so I'm pretty passionate about it.
I usually tip about 25-30 percent if the service is good.
If service is a little slow, or they make a few mistakes, I'll still leave a tip, usually about 10-15 percent.
If they're utterly incompetent, lazy, or rude, I'll leave a penny.
If I leave no tip, they can just claim that I'm inconsiderate or ignorant.
I insult them a penny because they insulted me with terrible service.
And I've had a fair share of rude waiters/waitresses. And I totally get where you're coming from. But, as a person who relies on tips. When someone doesn't leave a tip, I know it means that they don't think my service was good enough. When someone leaves a penny, it just feels like they are rubbing it in my face. Not every waiter/waitress thinks this way, I guess.
To be fair, and I'm not sure if this is the case for Riddles, it takes a LOT of neglect and rudeness to make me do that. If you can't get to me fast because it's busy, that's fine. Mess up my order? It happens. If someone actively seeks to mistreat me, which has happened, they get the penny.
Not leaving a tip doesn't necessarily mean they thought the service was bad. A surprising number of people (especially the elderly) don't understand that servers make less than minimum wage. It's not malice, it's just ignorance.
Right. And like I say, if they treat you badly, they do not deserve a tip. But, for me at least, when someone doesn't tip, I know that they think my service was not great. Leaving just a penny feels like the customer is saying, "You're bad at this. Do you know you're bad? Let me make an effort to show you that you're not doing great."
I don't know, perhaps I'm overly sensitive.
I've left penny tips maybe five or six times in the last decade. In one case, it was because the girl was obviously high, got my order astonishingly wrong, and swore at me when I asked her to fix her mistake.
You have to be apocalyptically terrible before I'll leave a penny tip.
I have to admit, I did laugh at the mean stoner story. I'm very sorry that you've had such poor experience. Perhaps it's ignorance, but I've never had a server so terrible that I've wanted to leave a penny tip. I suppose that's why I'm so incredulous.
