Well it may sound silly, but i've only seen this movie just now for the first time. I was pretty excited for it, but i usually wait for the DVD release. Quite honestly, it wasn't a bad movie by any means, but it certainly does NOT make a very good sequel. The first, foremost, and biggest problem is the two missing main characters, who couldn't be in this movie for obvious reasons if you've seen the last one. That alone should make movie producers think another sequel might not work, but yeah... Spoiler There's the annoying script, which seems to make any of the characters mention the words "Fountain of Youth" like once every 10 minutes at least. Yes people, we KNOW that's where they're all headed, no need to keep repeating it. There's the weird and anti-climactic plot. They deliver what they promised, Barely any plot twists, and the few plot twists the movie did have were predictable as hell right from the start. There's Blackbeard, who was the most bland, cliché, idiotic, and least threatening villain in the PotC series so far. Barbossa was an interesting character. He wasn't actually very cruel or maybe not even all that evil, but his character was well-made, and served his purpose extremely well. I always like a good "Vegeta" character if it's done properly. I find it a shame he wasn't in the second movie (unless you count the one line he had at the end.) and there's Davy Jones, who made a definite impact on the series, being an actual cruel villain with an amazing backstory. Davy was cruel because of his feelings (or lack thereof) and because he was betrayed. You could genuinly FEEL sorry for him when he died. Blackbeard was just cruel for the heck of it. (and not very good at it, might i add) There's the Spanish who have a surprisingly lesser part in this story. It feels like they've thrown them in for *squee!*s and giggles. At the end they just pop up and say "Hey we're still in this movie, dammit!" The "King", the silliest possible and most pathetic king i've ever seen, he didn't feel realistic at all. He was just a silly brainless jolly fat man. It's like they took something out of a Disney movie and... oh wait... And last but not least, there's the pathetic half-assed love story between the religious sap and his mermaid girlfriend, which i assume was supposed to take the place of Will and Elizabeth. Alot of people would say this movie was awesome because of "less Will, more Jack". But Jack Sparrow alone doesn't make Pirates of the Carribean what it should be. It delivered only what it promised, but a genuinly good movie should deliver more than what it promises. I am sad to give this movie a score of 6,5/10. Or in Will Turner's words: Spoiler What are your opinions, if any?
I enjoyed it for what it was. However, there is a lot I want to rant about....*ahem*: - Gibbs did nothing in this movie. I loved him in the previous movies, but he was just unlikeable in this one. - What happened to Marty, Cotton, Cotton's parrot, Pintel, Regetti, and the rest? Are they in that bottle? The monkey was... - Cap'n Teauge had no point. It was just an excuse to put Keith Richards in the movie for five seconds. - A living ship controlled by a sword....really? - I disliked Blackbeard's daughter. The crew and the zombies were cool though - Mermaids were a bit....eh... - The Spanish did nothing. The British didn't do much either....at least Lt. Gillete came back - What the hay happened to the preacher and the mermaid?!?! The only thing that I truly enjoyed of this movie was Barbossa, as usual. The end of the movie for him was fantastic! "Set sail for Tortuga!!" So yeah, those are my thoughts...
Actually Blackbeard's sword can make any ship come to life (and apparently turn them into a ship in a bottle), but i do get your point though. 1st Movie The Black Pearl: A scary ghost ship supposedly faster and more well-armed than any other ship in existence. If this was the only ship like that, awesome. 2nd Movie The Flying Dutchman: A mythological ship belonging to the equally mythical Davy Jones. Supposedly rivals the Black Pearl. Still an awesome idea. 4th Movie The Queen Anne's Revenge: Just a bad-ass looking ship captained by a bad-ass looking pirate, but that's it! There's nothing special about it. The sword of Blackbeard is what he used to control it, but... really? I also disliked the lack of the Black Pearl in the 4th movie... Compared to the other ships, the QAR is complete sh*t and a total letdown. I expected more from it, but half the movie was wasted on the entire cast walking around on an island looking for the Fountain of Youth. Litterally one hour of the movie went: "Are we close to the Fountain of Youth?" "Yes we're close." "I think were almost at the Fountain of Youth." "Is this the Fountain of Youth?" Seriously, half of the dialogue was exactly THAT... <_<
Well, in Blackbeard's ship's defense, it did have flamethrowers......that was cool. I did like the design of the fountain, it looked nice. All in all, it was a mediocre movie. I give it extra points for being partly filmed on my home island (Puerto Rico FTW, I recognized mostly everywhere the movie showed), extra points for Barbossa, and one point for a cool-looking zombie, but that's about it.
