So after the awesome Mystery Incorporated what they have now followed it up with Be Cool Scooby Doo. I will admit when I first saw the are for the series I thought it was going to be horrible. I watched the first ep and while I still hate the art style, the stories wasn't that bad. A bit more silly than the previous series, but okay.
I watched the first episode, and was a little disappointed. The art style is certainly going to take some getting used to. The story was pretty standard Scooby Doo fare. Not bad, but nothing new or exciting. Scooby and Shaggy were comic relief cowards. Nothing unusual there. Velma, as always, was the the smart one. Fred was still the leader, as he's always been. Then there was Daphne. Daphne Blake, the character that has long been the series' accident-prone Action Girl, is suddenly reduced to a complete airhead? What the actual Hell.
As I mentioned in you comments they've dumbed her down before. It doesn't really Surprise me. They really dumb down Fred for Mystery Inc. It's not a fail for me, annoying, but not a fail. I liked what they did for the first set of Direct to DVD movies, but in some of the recent ones she hasn't been as up there as she was when they started them.
It's not that they dumbed Daphne down, it's more that they made her a bit more eccentric. In fact, each of the characters are rendered more eccentric, just in different traits as a whole. The main goal behind this iteration was to make it more comedic and silly. Interesting note, the producer for Be Cool Scooby Doo has quite a history. Coordinator-Animation Intern for The Pagemaster Assistant Animator for Cats Don't Dance Development/Storyboard for some Johnny Bravo episodes Dealt with things in various Oh Yeah Cartoons such as Mina and the Count and two episodes of Fairy Oddparents Worked with storyboard and revisions on Dora the Explorer, Teacher's Pet, Kim Possible, Fairy Oddparents seasons 1 and 2, My Life as a Teenage Robot Directed a handful of episodes of Family Guy, was a director/storyboarder/writer for Phineas and Ferb, and was a supervising director for Brickleberry. People in the industry really get around.
Well I guess I need to watch more than just one episode. I did like the part where Scooby and Shaggy hired the actors.
To be honest, nothing will ever compare to the original "Scooby Doo, Where Are You!" I loved watching it on Saturday mornings as a kid. I also enjoyed "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" and "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo". I can't bring myself to watch the newest installment. The art style is just not tasteful to me. I did enjoy Mystery Incorporated as it put a new spin on the classic and the art style was lovely. This new show though ... It looks like it's made to distract toddlers while parents do their taxes. I'm sure I'm being harsh and the story isn't all that bad but ... I can't take something seriously when it looks like a middle school animation project. -Nights
I've been watching the new series more, and I think it's growing on me. I love how the Mystery Machine has evolved from a simple hippy van into Fred's personal Batmobile.
That's one of the things I loved about the first ep. He presses a button and the van turns into junk. I still haven't watched more.
