The Adventures of Mark Twain This is a strangely charming little thing. It's animation ranges from choppy to impressive for strange reasons. Sometimes you'll marvel at how expressive the faces can get and even get hypnotised by Mark Twain's mustache as it flawlessly rides his upper lip, making him a strangely pleasant character to listen to and watch. And you'll also notice that they like their 'morph' effects a great deal and that some characters will hover across the floor like they're being pushed forwards by ice. The story is a weird cobbling of various aspects of Twain's body of work, framed by the idea that Twain wants to join with a comet that passed Earth on the year of his birth as he believed he shares a bond with. So naturally, he builds an airship and sets off. However Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer sneak aboard and join Twain on his journey. What I find interesting is how they represent Twain and his work. They do things like literally split Twain into his pleasant and melancholy halves as well as base entire skits on a few bits of his work, ranging from extracts from his work that's spouted just in passing to entire recreations of his work, like "The Diaries of Adam and Eve (Letters from the Earth)" and The Mysterious Stranger. Which brings me onto why you might have heard of this one. Does he look familiar? Aaaaaand your nightmares are back for another week. This scene with Satan himself is with the cynical Twain as the children look through the rooms in the airship and randomly discover the fallen angel. It's...interesting, I'll give it that. If they were looking for something that could freak any aged person to their core, they did a phenomenal job. The design of Satan is pretty unique too, what with the idea of his face being a masquerade mask. So, does it all work? I think so. It's nicely detailed, when the animation is good, it's good and the writing they've cherry picked is interesting. Heck, I've even learnt some things about the man when I came in knowing nothing. But enough of my rambling, how about you guys? What did you think of it? Did you see the scene with Satan before the movie? Wish you could watch Mark Twain's little clay face talk for hours and hours? Tell meeeee!
